Merge PDFs for Job Application

Most applicant tracking systems like Workday, Greenhouse, and Lever allow only one file per upload field. Some even strip out extra attachments silently. Merging ensures nothing gets lost.

Resume first, then cover letter, then supporting documents. HR scans the first page for your name and contact info. If your resume is buried on page 5, you may get overlooked.

Most modern ATS can parse merged PDFs, but some older systems struggle. To be safe, keep your resume as a standalone file for systems that accept it, and use the merged version only for single-file uploads.

For 3-4 documents, no — it wastes space. For 6+ documents, a single page listing document titles and page ranges helps the recruiter navigate.

Compress the merged PDF using the compress tool. If it is still too large, downsample images first — a 300 DPI scan of a certificate is overkill; 150 DPI is fine for screen viewing.
